Hi,
my name is Stefani Magee. I have taken the time to research
the
gray wolf. I have taken most of the facts that I have learned and
mixed
them with the facts that I already knew about wolves. Here are
some
of the facts that I have gathered together to make a website. I
hope
you
like it!
The
Gray Wolf, (Canis lupus) also known
as Timber Wolf is the largest of
around
41 wild species in the dog family, Canidae. Wolves normally hunt
for
theirs and their f and their babies at night. Wolves normally
hunt large
hoofed
mammals. They eat a lot of different types of animals. Some of
the
things
that they eat include caribou, deer, moose, and elk. Sometimes
they
eat
other things like berries, beavers, fish, insects, and birds.
Wolves
normally
go for the animals that are either really young, really old,
or animals
that
are weaker members of the wolf population. Some people think
that all
wolves
will attack a human if they see one. That is not true. The
unhealthy
wolves
are the ones that would attack a human. Healthy wolves would
rarely
ever attack a human. Wolves used to live all over North America,
but
now
they only mainly live in the upper states of the U.S. and in
Canada.
Gray
wolves mate for their whole entire life. They live in packs
between the
sizes
of two to over fifteen wolves in each pack. Even though
they can
have
from two to fifteen wolves in a pack, there are normally only four
to
seven wolves in them. The strongest male member of a pack is who the
leader
is. The leader of a pack is the one that decides where the
other
wolves
will hunt for food. The wolf pack territories can cover
anywhere
from
one hundred to two hundred and sixty square miles, that all
depends
on
where they get their food from and where they get their water
from.
Some
wolves can leave their pack and go out on their own. Wolves that do
that
it are called lone wolves. Lone wolves are able to start
their own new
pack
if they find a mating wolf and a large vacant area.
A
wolves breeding season can go from January to April. Their
breeding season can alter from spring through summer to autumn through
winter. By the time it hits autumn, wolf pups are capable of
traveling for
very long distances with the adults. Normally only the highest ranking
male
and female that is in a group are the ones that will breed. Even
though the
highest-ranking wolves are the ones that have the baby wolves,
all of the
other wolves in the pack are expected to help out with raising
the young.
The gestation period for a wolf in sixty-three days.
Things
that affects a wolf includes things like, being killed by
humans, being killed by other wolves, getting diseases, dying from
parasites, starvation, and injuries by prey. Most wolves only live up to
ten years in the wild.
Description of
wolves.
The
Gray wolf can be anywhere between twenty-six to thirty-eight
inches in height, and from thirty-nine all the way up to eighty
inches in
length. The weight of a wolf ranges from fifty-seven to one-hundred and
thirty pounds. Wolves have rounded ears These mammals’ coats can
be
four different colors. It can be either grey, white, brown, or
black. They
can also have all four of these colors!
Did you know?
Did
you know that gray wolves
travel greater
distances than any other
land mammal except the caribou?
Did you know that wolves’ feet are
very large? Their feet can be from
four inches to five inches long. In
captivity wolves can live up to
sixteen years.
Wolves
have forty-two teeth. When wolf
cubs are born they
weigh about one pound and
they cannot see or hear anything. A wolf
that is in a hurry can
go up to thirty-five miles but for only a short
distance. I have a favorite
fact about wolves. My favorite fact about
wolves that a lot of people
do not normally know is that wolves cannot
die from rabies! Yeah I said
it, wolves can’t die from rabies,
they can
pass it on to other mammals
that are not in the wolf family, but they
can’t die. I think that that
trait about wolves is really cool because I
have a wolf, and one time
when she was outside in my back yard her
and a raccoon got in a fight
and if she ended up getting rabies, it
wouldn’t matter.
