Dance
Dancing is a way of
communicating through motion. It’s just a way of moving to different
rythms and beats. And making it your own style. Music and dance are
created and performed together. There are different ways of using dance
like dance therapy. Dance therapy is a way of expressing
mental/emotional and physical problems through dance moves. It is
basically using dance moves in healing rituals. Dance therapists help
guide people to communicate through dance because dance was originally
used to tell a story/myth. It’s unknown how dance even became a part of
american culture but it has always been a really big part of ceremony,
rituals, celebrations, and obviously entertainment. There has been
traces of dance since prehistoric times. Mostly then dance was a
performance in telling myths. To express feelings people would do a
dance to get the point across rather then words. Stories mainly got
passed down from generations through dance! Until a while later
dance only was known of that one thing (telling a myth) but now dance
is much more about practicing performance and technical skills.
But
there are more ways to be involved with dance other than just dancer.
Some dance occupations are dancer, dance teacher, dancesport coach,
dance therapist, and choreagrapher. A dancer obviously does the actual
dance. Dance teachers teach the dance but do not make it up. Not to be
confused with choreagrapher. Dancesport coaches coach a dance
tournament. A dance therapist provides a different way of therapy
routines so it keeps them in touch with their dance qualities. And
choreagrapher makes up the dance and teaches it. Most dancers make up
their own choreagraphy to make it easier to set the mood of whatever
the are trying to say through their dance.
Some
professional dancers are Cheryl Burke who is a professional
ballroom dancer. She started ballet at 4 years old and got into
ballroom dance at age 11. She won the second season of Dancing with the
Stars with her partner Drew Lachey.
Another
is Tony Dovolani. He was partnered with Stacy Keibler in season 2 of
Dancing with the Stars and was short of making final two in the end.
There are so many different types like
jazz, ballet, hip hop, break dance, african dance, ballroom, tap etc.
Jazz
is mostly a mix of ballet
technique but can cross over to other styles like hip hop.
Ballet
is a really technical way of moving slowly and gracefully in turns and
leaps. It’s related a lot to mime and acting with very precise
movements.
Hip hop is a very
popular
genre
of dance generated in New York City. It includes movement of break
dance and street dance.
Break dance!
Usually being danced
to hip hop, pop or funk music it is like a twist to street dance. Using
handstands and spins in a routine to make it like a challenge of
talent. Much less technical then ballet which probably is why it makes
it so much more interesting to watch.
African dance is an extremely
cultural form of dance. It uses mostly the beat of drums or voices to
do original moves like stamping feet, or clapping.
Ballroom, another pretty
technical dance that requires a lot of form and repetetive steps. It’s
a highly competetive partner dance danced to old classical music.
Tap dance. Tap is type of dance using a lot
of feet coordination. Making it a routine and music at the same time
makes it a very theatrical dance.
